Why I’m Moving to Made-to-Order
I’ve Spent This First Year Building Ramble & Riot The Way Most New Makers Do: A Batch At A Time, Guessing At Sizes And Stones Before Anyone’s Asked For Them. It Gets Pieces Into The World Fast, But It Also Means Silver And Sourcing Money Sit In A Drawer Instead Of Going Toward The Next Piece Somebody Actually Wants.
I’m Doing This Alongside A Full-Time Job, Which Means Every Hour At The Bench Is Borrowed From Somewhere Else — Evenings, Weekends, The Occasional Lunch Break Spent Answering Messages Instead Of Eating. Stocking A Full Range Of Sizes And Stone Combinations “Just In Case” Was Never Sustainable On That Schedule. It Meant Spending Real Hours Making Pieces I Wasn’t Sure Anyone Wanted, Instead Of Putting That Same Time Into A Piece I Knew Someone Was Actually Waiting For. The Math Only Works One Way When You’re Building A Business Around A Day Job Instead Of Around It.
Starting This Fall, Ramble & Riot Is Shifting Entirely To Made-To-Order. Every New Piece Gets Built After You Order It, Which Means It Takes Longer — Usually Four To Eight Weeks Depending On What You’re Asking For. It Also Means Less Waste, Truer One-Of-Ones, And A Business That Isn’t Guessing At What You’ll Like.
The Honest Reason Is Partly Financial And Partly Something Closer To Craft. Every Piece I Make On Spec Ties Up Silver And Stones That Could Otherwise Go Toward A Design Someone’s Actually Asked For — And Sourcing A Stone I Know Is Headed To A Specific Person Changes How I Pick It. I Spend More Time With It. I Hold It Up To The Light A Few More Times Before I Decide It’s The One. That’s A Level Of Attention I Simply Can’t Give Fifteen Rings At Once, Made On A Guess.
This Doesn’t Mean Everything Disappears Overnight. What’s Already Finished And Sitting In My Studio Isn’t Going Up As A “Ready To Ship” Section On The Website — Instead, I’m Holding That Existing Inventory For Pop-Ups And In-Person Markets, Where You Can Actually Try A Piece On Before It Goes Home With You. If You’ve Been Eyeing Something From A Past Market Or A Photo, Come Find Me At The Next One And Ask If It’s Still Around.
Custom Commissions Work Simply. Reach Out And Tell Me What You’re Picturing — A Stone You Love, A Piece You Want Resized, Or Something Built From Scratch. We’ll Talk Through Materials And Timeline Together Before Anything Gets Cut, So There Aren’t Any Surprises Once The Torch Comes Out. It’s A Slower Way To Buy Jewelry Than Clicking “Add To Cart” On Something Already Sitting On A Shelf, But It Means The Piece That Shows Up At Your Door Was Actually Built With You In Mind, Not Built On A Guess Months Before We’d Ever Spoken.
A Few Practical Notes While This Is New. If You’re Working Toward A Deadline — A Birthday, An Anniversary, A Trip — Tell Me Up Front And I’ll Let You Know If It’s Realistic Before You Order, Not After. You’ll Hear From Me At The Start To Confirm Details, And Again Once It Ships, So You’re Never Left Wondering Where Things Stand. And If Four To Eight Weeks Doesn’t Work For What You Need Right Now, That’s Exactly What The Pop-Up Calendar Is For — Finished Pieces You Can Take Home The Same Day.
This Also Just Fits The Brand Better. Ramble & Riot Has Never Been About Turning Out The Same Piece A Hundred Times — It’s About Building Something For The Person Who’s Going To Actually Wear It Into A Life That Looks Like Theirs, Not A Display Case. Made-To-Order Isn’t A Trend For Us. It’s The Model The Whole Idea Was Always Pointed Toward; It Just Took A Year Of Doing It The Other Way To Prove That Out.
Sourcing Gets More Intentional Too. Instead Of Buying Stones In Bulk To Keep A Range Of Options In Stock, I’m Now Able To Pick Each One With A Specific Piece — And Often A Specific Person — In Mind, Which Means More Time Spent Choosing Color, Matrix, And Cut Instead Of Grabbing Whatever’s Closest To What I Already Have On Hand.
If You’re Ordering A Ring, Save Yourself A Round Of Emails And Check Your Size Before You Order — There’s A Sizing Guide Linked On The Site That Walks Through Ring Sizing As Well As The Difference Between A Cuff And A Bangle, If You’re Less Sure Which One You’re Actually Measuring. Cuffs And Bangles List Their Size Range Right In The Variant Dropdown On Each Product, So What You See Is What You’re Choosing; Rings Are The One Category Worth Double-Checking Before You Hit Order, Since Those Get Built To An Exact Size Rather Than One That Flexes.
Here’s What That Means For You Right Now: Shop What’s In The Collection And I’ll Make It Just For You, Or Reach Out To Start A Custom Commission. Thank You For Being Here For This Version Of Ramble & Riot.
