The Stone
Tiger's Eye is a variety of quartz that forms when silica gradually replaces fibers of crocidolite (a form of blue asbestos), preserving the original fiber structure — that structure is exactly what produces the "cat's eye" chatoyancy once the stone is cut and polished. It rates a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, durable enough for daily wear. The most significant deposits were discovered in South Africa's Northern Cape Province in the late 1800s, and the stone was popularized across 19th-century Europe as mineral collecting and gem-cutting expanded — becoming especially fashionable in Victorian-era men's jewelry, worn in signet rings and watch fobs. Fitting company for a ring built to keep watch.
